Hargrove, responded to a move by the state that would apologise to slave descendants for slavery I guess by saying " slavery ended nearly 140 years ago with the Civil War and added that "our black citizens should get over it." and to not leave out the Jews he said "are we going to force the Jews to apologize for killing Christ?"
"When somebody tells me I should just get over slavery, I can only express my emotion by projecting that I am appalled, absolutely appalled," said Del. Dwight C. Jones, head of the Legislative Black Caucus.
Del. David L. Englin also criticized Hargrove's remarks, recalling that his grandparents were driven from their homes in Poland "by people who believed that as Jews, we killed Christ."
When Hargrove rose to speak, he told Englin he didn't care about Englin's religion. "I think your skin was a little too thin *ya big nosed money lender*," Hargrove said as lawmakers gasped and groaned.
I think this is funny as fuck, all the political double talk then someone says this. I don't know anything about Hargrove hes a Republican which doesn't automatically dismiss anything he says in my book as my mind is as open as the great plains, if it turns out hes some white supremacist then there goes any credibility as I do believe he has a point.

The Whites were too lazy to work so they made the Blacks in Africa into slaves, something they themselves and the Arabs had been doing for hundreds of years amongst themselves, no apologies there, the British actually talked the Arabs into abolishing slavery in Africa and paid money too, we even pissed off the Boers of South Africa when we suggested they stopped keeping slaves (pissed off is putting it mildly some people don't like the British telling them what to do) and still those that didn't get any money call for some today.
Due to the slaves being uppity and public opinion slavery stopped in Britain, and other European countries and then in America, The American civil war was a good device to get the states together and for the common man to believe it was about slavery which was a happy by product of it not the reason for it.
Was the thousands that died in the war fighting against slavery and the rest not enough to make up for it?
To the black people, how is yer live worse off today if your descendants had been left in Africa?

It's hardly the first here. It's just the first that someone took seriously, because there was violence involved. Whites are a minority now here in California, and my daughter gets picked on just for being white. It's not an apology that gets me, as it would be a token, like the Pope apologizing for anything in the past. It's the idea that people whose ancestors were mistreated should receive cash. As if cash heals. My great great great somebody was a share cropper, so maybe I should get cash because a richer person owned the land and didn't share properly.
I do think come kind of apology is in order (and Babs, I think one should go to Native Americans too). It isn't enough, as even after slavery was over, between Jim Crow in the South and rampant racism in the North, African Americans on the whole were left with no opportunities. The ghettos of today are also rooted in racism (read There Are No Children Here by Alex Kotlowitz for an excellent, yet accessible, description of how this happened and why it has continued). Not to mention that the propserity of this country was largely built on African-American labor, or in support of it (the first industrial factories supplied clothing and shoes for slaves).
Yes, these African-Americans are not the direct victims of slavery. But just as I benefit every day from being white in America, every day, they pay for being black in America. The Civil Rights movement made a lot of gains, but the wounds are still there.
Still, an apology is something. And if this guy really thought it was nothing, then he wouldn't hesitate to do it.
