I often wonder why there isn't a dragon in the Union Jack. Another query is about that song in the charts when my Da was young 'You don't get me I'm not part of the union, you don't get me I'm not part of the union, la de da de da...' was it a Welsh song?
Theres no pasty on the flag either, that song was played everywhere, I dodn't get into the lyrics and always assumed it had to do with trade unions and coal mines, I guess I must search.
Hmm, Knuddy, I knows ya only put that 'Irish' flag in to annoy... since there is no Irish 'cross' like SS George & Andrew's ones. Unless it was the cross we had to bear as a nation... graphically rendered as a melding of the England (incl Wales) + Scotland crosses, after the Act of 'Union' did away with the then Irish parliament.
Thanks for the reference Knud, it proves my point: "While it cannot be said that the St Patrick's Cross was ever used as a flag before the Union".
It was a madey up thing in 1783 by a gang of aristos who wanted to give themselves additional gongs and 'honours'! They had just got a new clubhouse (parliament) and they wanted to decorate it. Yawn.
Ahah! Still going I see. The Union of crowns did not change the flag. It was the union of parliaments in 1707. We then became Great Britain, a reference to the geographical land mass, not the fact we were great, which came later. 10,000 Sudanese, 2 Maxim guns. Them were the days. No licking Bush's boots then. The senior service would have blown anyone to kingdom come! Arrrr, here's to the two power standard and damn yer Dago eyes to Hell!
To be honest I don't give a shite when it happened the flags were the point to piss off Footeater's dead teacher who looked at the union flag and said"at least it wasn't Scottish" even though there is a Saltire in it, and as to 1606 that is correct, to you civilians thats 4.o6 pm and thats when it happened, anyway only an nickpicker with OCD would be bothered by the date, I stand and salute every I scroll doon, God save the Queen! Dr Maroon and Mr Hyde you are.
Foot Eater's teacher was Afrikaaner and therefore not qualified to talk. Ever. It's amazing what a little beer, a sense of injustice, and a sketchy grip of history can acheive. A flag after all is only a piece of cloth with a lot of bullshit stuck to it. Personally, I've always liked the Union Jack, even though it, like the saltire and even the lion rampant, have been hi-jacked by the ignorant. (No offence, I didn't mean you , I meant those other ignorants). How often have you been in the unfortunate position of talking to a pissed up berk at the office do who is dressed in kilt and laced up blouson thing (Rob Roy) going on and on about Rangers and the SNP and how the English are to blame. Somehow their argument would carry more weight if they hadn't obviously got it handed to them and swallowed it whole without thinking only to regurgitate it when tanked up. This actually happened to me and when I pointed out the young lad's mass of contradictions, he got quite shirty [sic] however I was more sober and would have broken every bone in his body so he calmed down and had another vol-au-vent. God knows what Princess Anne thought.
Ah Mr Hyde, I think I was just talking to an Irish version a while back, have you met Mr Drumm ? I know what we've done as a nation, somethings good and some pretty shite, I like the idea of the Empire as long as I am the empire. Flags and pride is all some people have, of course that gobshite you were talking to was probably a law student, always the first to argue and not know shit. The red hand of Ulster, the Irish tri colour and the US confrederate flags are just 3 hijacked flags that have lost a lot of their power and have become something different than what they are meant to be.
The date 1606 was the history of the flag not necessarily the date of the offical union.

According to Whitney Smith's book on flags, merchant ships from 1606-1634 flew the Union Jack (minus the cross of St Patrick of course) on the foremast and the flag of England (Cross of St George) on the jack staff. He gives four possible positions for flags, going from fore to aft on the ship they are: jack staff, foremast, mainmast, ensign staff.
Well I'll bow to your's and Mr 'Whitney' Smith's (if that's his real name) greater knowledge. I doubt very much if a Union flag was ever flown in Scotland before 1707. I love flags me. I quite like pennants. Or is it Tennants? Or Pedants?

You mean there's sex for adults now?
We'll have none of that sort of stuff on this blog, just sex for kiddies.

I wonder why there's no Welsh flag included in any of those Union flags.

I feel as if I learned something new here today. I never knew that the Union Jack was an amalgam of all the flags.

its you maven
you have a very furtive look about you, yes indeed a fine history, we still own Ireland but we tell them they're free, hahaha.
for cyberscribe Wales is seen as a Principality and not a Kingdom as Scotland is, which is why there is no pasty or redhand on it either.
Thank You Mr Knudsen!
My hen laid an egg on a piece of straw...

pissing off dead people is wrong and only a complete wanker would do so.
Foot Eater's teacher was Afrikaaner and therefore not qualified to talk.
Ever.
